Prayer Stations for ‘To Walk with a Child’

Woodstock, March 2006

Sally Dakin & Paula Pocock

Focus of prayer station

‘Instructions’

Equipment

1. gathering/awareness

What kind of a fruit or nut are you today?!

Notice how different they look on the inside...

God created you and knows what you’re like on the inside – and loves you totally

variety of nuts (some open), basket, variety of fruits (some open), fruit bowl

Collect for Purity

2. sorry

You may be aware of ‘litter’ in your life that you’d like to get rid of – things that clutter up your life and distract you… unhelpful habits… issues from the past…

Write down whatever you are willing to let go of, and acknowledge it before God. When you’re ready, put the paper in the paper shredder and turn the handle.

A6 paper, pencils, eraser, paper shredder, waste bin

3. thanks & praise

Let’s make a paper-chain expressing our thanks and praise to God! Take some strips and write a thank-you prayer on each… then join them onto the end of the chain.

paper chain strips in dish, felt-tips in pot, stapler & staples, book of thank you prayers

4. thanks & praise

Try blowing bubbles to God as an expression of praise and thanksgiving...

bubble mixture, wand on saucer

5. thanks & praise

Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Make a joyful noise to him with these bottles: tap them or blow across their tops; experiment with different amounts of water…

glass bottles, chopstick, rubber mat, jug of water, funnel, J-cloth

6. intimacy/openness

God welcomes us into his presence - we can have a ‘private audience’ with him whenever we like. He loves us to spend time with him ‘in secret’…

‘Welcome’ doormat, pop-up tent, sleeping bag, rug, cushions, Bible

Psalm 61:1-4

Matthew 6:9-13

7. openness

God wants us to trust in him, to experience his love and peace, and to let him deal with our fears.

Choose a snake or a spider to represent something you feel anxious or fearful about, and consider what it would mean to surrender that fear to God.

When you’re ready, hand it over to him, and take time to receive his peace.

8. prayer for people

Take a shell to represent someone you’d like to pray for, and hold them before God as you remember their needs. Then let the shell go into the water as you entrust them to his loving care.

shells in basket, bowl

9. prayer for people

This is a sort of prayerful ‘Lucky Dip’: who will you pray for?! Take a letter out of the bag, and pray for someone whose name begins with that letter. Replace and repeat as many times as you like. You can stencil their initial on the big sheet, or add a letter sticker for them. Scrabble letters in a bag, A1 paper, alphabet stencils, felt-tips in pot, alphabet stickers, baby names book

10. prayer for church

Here you can pray for the life and growth of your church.

Take a ‘brick’ to represent yourself, and as you build yourself into the structure, offer yourself for God’s indwelling.

Lego bricks in dish, baseboard

11. prayer for world

Write (or draw) your concerns with wax crayon on a piece of card, then brush over it with watery paint as you pray for God’s healing and forgiveness and justice and peace.

A4 card, wax crayons, paint, water, brushes, dish, floor covering

12. going out

Looking forward to the coming of God’s kingdom in the world and in your life, take a bulb to reflect on.

When you are ready, plant the bulb and water it, trusting yourself and all your concerns to God and his purposes.
